Family Holiday Travel Tips

With the holidays quickly approaching, many people are making plans to spend time with their families. If your relatives live in another state or town, you will have to travel to spend time with them. Here are a few things to consider when traveling with kids during the holidays.

Schedule around their school and activities.

If your children are in school, you should consider their schedule when making holiday travel plans. Your child might have finals, holiday parties, concerts, etc. that they wouldn't be able to miss. Speak to your child's school, teachers, and coaches while planning to make sure they don't miss out on anything important.

Medication

If your child is on medication or needs a particular emergency medication like an epi-pen for emergencies, pack those for your child's safety. It might be difficult and expensive to get these while traveling and can be dangerous not to have handy.

Entertainment

Children get bored quickly during road trips, so pack entertainment they can enjoy along the way like books, music, activity packs, toys, and electronic devices.

Food

Have enough food and snacks for the length of your trip handy for the kids traveling with you. If you plan to purchase food instead, add the time to stop and get food to your schedule. The food at rest stops along the highway, can be expensive and not as healthy as the options you would choose at home, so walk with your meals if you want the kids traveling with you to have nourishing meals.

Practice car seat safety.

Driving along the highway can be quite dangerous, especially during the colder months, so be as safe as possible. All the kids in your car should be strapped in safely in an appropriate car seat for their height and size.
