Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

In the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer

When you think of Jeep, the first things that usually come to mind are ruggedness, off-road capability, and enjoying the outdoors. And while those characteristics remain baked in the DNA of every Jeep, the brand has been making considerable strides in cutting-edge technology areas too - especially with their Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Level 2 Autonomous Driving Technologies. These technologies hold the promise of making life better for Jeep owners by reducing accidents and collisions.

What are ADAS systems?

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are electronic systems that assist drivers in driving and parking functions. ADAS systems use sophisticated imaging technology, such as sensors and cameras, to detect nearby obstacles and respond accordingly.

Why are they so important?

Most road accidents occur due to human error. This is unfortunate but humans can make mistakes and sometimes this results in accidents. ADAS systems are designed to avoid accidents by offering technologies that alert the driver to problems and taking control of the vehicle, in some cases.

What are the ADAS technologies in Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers?

A number of ADAS systems are being developed for Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models,  including Active Driving Assist, Hands-free Active Driving Assist, Intersection Collision Assist, ParkSense Automated Parking System, and Night Vision Camera.

Active Driving Assist is Jeeps' name for Level 2 automated driving capability. The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will be available with Active Driving Assist for hands-on-wheel and eyes-on-road automated driving using lane-centering control in the future, though no specific release date has been announced. The system uses multiple sensors, including radars and cameras.

Hands-free Active Driving Assist offers hands-off driving and lane centering but the driver will still need to be able to take over control quickly if needed. The system will predictively slow the vehicle down in tight curves, automatically resume control, and verify that the driver is paying attention to the road. This technology is currently in development.

Intersection Collision Assist helps detect vehicles on a crossroad that approach from the driver's left and right. Four radar sensors and one camera determine if a collision is about to occur and immediately issues audible and visual alerts. If the driver does not respond, the system automatically activates the vehicle's brakes. This feature is available on Wagoneer and standard on Grand Wagoneer models.

ParkSense Automated Parking System assists drivers in parking their vehicles using computer processors tied to multiple sensors. For those equipped with the ParkSense, the car itself steers into a parking space with minimal help from the driver. Using special sensors, the processor determines the steering angle and displays it on the touchscreen with the obstacle information. As the vehicle shifts into reverse, the backup camera is triggered, allowing drivers to see behind their vehicles.

Night Vision Camera applies thermographic technology to search for the heat signatures of pedestrians and animals in front of the vehicle at distances up to 200 meters (656 feet). When it detects a pedestrian or an animal, the system indicates its position on the display and alerts the driver.
