From Fighter Jets to Wagoneers – Head-Up Displays
The new 2022 Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers offer a unique information display technology called Head-Up Displays (HUDs). These systems project information on the windshield so the driver can view vehicle-related data and still view the road ahead. On the 2022 Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers, the full-color HUD display is adjustable up to 10 inches and features data concerning Lane Departure, Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Turn-by-Turn navigation, current speed, current gear, and speed limit.
Cool cutting-edge technology, right? Well, not actually. HUDs were originally designed for fighter aircraft way back in the 1950s. They were CRT-based displays back then and they showed altitude, speed, and the status of targeting systems. Today, they are far more capable.
So what does a HUD look like?
So what does a HUD look like? Think of your windshield as a piece of glass to look out of as well as a screen for data display. A HUD system projects graphical data right at eye level on the windshield. It’s a little hard to explain exactly what this looks like but some have described it as images that appear to float on the glass.
How do HUDs work?
The tech for HUDs varies on the system. Some cars use transparent phosphors on the windshield that glow when a semi-conductor laser shines on it. When the laser is off, you don't see anything, but when the laser turns on, information can be projected on the windshield. Other HUDs incorporate mirrors to actually project LCD images on the windshield.
So why do we need this, anyway?
Basically, because the information, alerts, and other gadgets we're adding to our vehicles are distracting us from the road! We need a new way to display this information that keeps our eyes up and on the road -- hence, HUD systems.
