In case anyone is wondering, the new Jeep 4xe Wrangler has all the capability of a genuine Jeep. You can rest assured that the engineers at Jeep would have it no other way. There is nothing less than 80 years of off-roading tradition behind the design of any new Jeep!.
And, this may be shocking to some, the 4xe might be better than the previous generations of liquid fuel consuming Jeeps. For example, the Jeep 4xe PHEV actually offers a mind-blowing 470 lb-ft of torque. Contrast that with the diesel 3.0-liter V-6 version rated at 442 lb-ft of torque. Even if Jeep builds a 6.4-liter Hemi Rubicon, which has been discussed, the 4xe will still have an advantage of 20 lb-ft over it!
How can a PHEV have more power than a Hemi V8?
Two words: Electric Motors. The 4xe essentially has three motors in it: a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four engine plus 2 powerful electric motors.
The first electric motor is a 33-kW, 44 horsepower motor that is bolted onto the inline-four. This motor adds boost to the Wrangler when needed and also functions as an alternator. The second electric motor is a beefier 100-kW, 134 horsepower unit that is mounted within the transmission housing.
So, why is the 4xe Wrangler more powerful than the gas and diesel engine versions? Because all three motors can be powered up simultaneously and this combo puts out a big 470 lb-ft of torque.
Is the Jeep 4xe really built for off-roading?
It certainly is. Just like the non-hybrid models, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe has over 10” of ground clearance, a full frame, skid-plates, and a transfer case-driven 4WD system. If you opt for the iconic Rubicon trim, you get front and rear locking differentials, a shorter final drive ratio, Dana axles, an electronically-disconnecting sway bar, and larger off-road tires.
Can the 4xe Wrangler operate just on battery power?
Yes, and this is one of the great features of the 4xe – quiet off-roading! The engineers at Jeep have designed 4xe with a 17.3-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack which can power the 4xe in full electric mode for a range of 25 quiet miles.
