Check the Speed Limit
While it can be tempting to speed when you see other drivers traveling twenty miles over the speed limit, you will want to stay at the speed limit as it will help you avoid an accident if you see an impending hazard on the road. The faster your vehicle is traveling on the highway, the longer it will take you to come to a complete stop. You're also going to want to watch out for weather conditions that will require you to reduce your speed, such as rain, wind, or fog.
Stay in the Right Lane
When you're on the freeway, the basic rule is for vehicles to stay in the right lane unless you need to pass another car. If you're not passing a vehicle that is traveling slowly, be sure to keep it to the right. Try to avoid being in the lane to the far left unless you need to continue passing, return to the center or the right lane. You might be able to move to the middle lane while vehicles are entering the highway from the on-ramp.
Make Appropriate Lane Changes
A good rule of thumb is to leave four to six seconds of space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you as you change lanes. Check your rearview and side-view mirrors and blind spots before you move over into the next lane. Next, use your turn signal to indicate where you intend to head to. Be sure to always keep your speed constant, look over your shoulder, and check your mirrors for approaching vehicles. Finally, move the steering wheel slightly to move into the next lane as making quick movements can lead to an accident.
Be Visible
Before you head out onto the highway, you need to make sure that others can see you. Be sure to turn on your headlights when the sun is setting or when there is fog or rain. Make sure that your headlights are clean so that they shine clearly and you can see the road ahead of you. If you're traveling on a bike or motorcycle, make sure to wear protective clothing. Finally, try to stay out of the blind spots of other vehicles.
Block out Distractions
Don't let anything or anyone distract you from concentrating on the road. It's better to handle any issues you may have once you've reached your destination. To keep your attention on the street, avoid or ignore such distractions as talking or texting, eating or drinking, noisy passengers, and any children or pets that are inside the vehicle. Lack of sleep can also be a distraction, and don't drive if you haven't had enough sleep. If you are traveling a great distance, it's a good idea to stop driving every two hours. Ensure that you close your eyes for a minute or two during breaks to prevent eye strain on a trip.
