Back in the early 2000s, Chrysler Corporation realized that a growing part of their Jeep customer base was interested in serious off-roading. The problem is that the Jeep brand encompassed a large variety of vehicles and not all were really “off-road ready.” In 2004, in order to make the off-roading decision process easier for potential buyers, Jeep introduced their Trail Rated designation. To meet this designation, which carries on today, vehicles are rigorously tested and evaluated for vehicle traction, maneuverability, ground clearance, water fording, and off-road articulation. Here’s what you should know about Jeep’s Trail Rated designation.

To be Trail Rated, what traction and maneuverability criteria are involved?

All Jeep Brand Trail Rated vehicles have 4x4 drivetrains and these are tested to make sure they perform well under off-road conditions. In practice, this means climbing steep slopes and rugged terrain. As for maneuverability, the vehicle must do this and handle rapid decision situations such as obstacles and trail hazards.

What should I know about suspension articulation and ground clearance?

Articulation refers to the suspension movement under the Jeep and Trail Rated Jeeps are required to have a great deal of articulation so they can handle rough terrain. As for ground clearance, rocks, logs, and other debris won't be in the way if a vehicle's body is high enough off the ground. With the level of ground clearance required to be Trail Rated, owners can drive over common trail obstacles without damage occurring.

What water fording criteria do Jeeps need to meet to be Trail Rated?

Trail Rated Jeeps can travel across bodies of water that other vehicles can’t. Jeep engineers have accomplished this by sealing electrical connections and body openings, and positioning the engine air intake higher. These details protect the vehicle and occupants when driving through deep bodies of water up to 19-30 inches deep.

What Jeep models are Trail Rated?

Each Jeep model in the current lineup has at least one trim level that is Trail Rated. These models include the Cherokee, Gladiator, Grand Cherokee, Renegade, and Wrangler.
